COVID-19 is a new strain of the Coronavirus which is spread through respiratory droplets that are passed from one person to another and is highly contagious. These respiratory droplets are commonly transferred by an infected person through coughing and sneezing. The droplets carrying the virus can either be inhaled by people nearby the infected person or land on surfaces where they can be spread to the mouth, nose or eyes through contact with the hands.
Symptoms can range from mild flu or cold-like symptoms to resulting in severe and life-threatening conditions. In some cases, infected persons can remain asymptomatic (show not symptoms) but are still carriers and can therefore still transmit the disease.
The following precautions should be taken to avoid contracting COVID-19:
– Avoid public and crowded places.
– Keep a minimum if 6 feet between you and other people.
– Wash your hands as often as possible using soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) provides detailed instructions for optimal hand-washing.
– Hand sanitizer should be used if hand-washing is not possible. Sanitizer should have a minimum if 60% alcohol concentration to be effective.
– Do not touch your face, mouth, nose and eyes.
– Wear rubber gloves or clean and sanitize surfaces before touching them.
– Shower and wash with soap and water when returning home from public places.
Infected people should take the following additional precautions to prevent transmitting COVID-19 to others:
– Stay at home and avoid traveling anywhere until symptoms have disappeared entirely.
– Cough into your elbow or shoulder and not your hands.
– Wash hands with soap and water preferably within 20 seconds of coughing or sneezing, touching your face or using a restroom.
– Wear a face mask.
– Keep at least a 6-foot distance between yourself and other people.
